Rachael Ray Controversies

$5 Million Suit Against Nutrish

As per a post published by Top Class Actions, Markeith Parks filed a $5 Million lawsuit against Rachael Ray’s brand Nutrish for false advertising. He stated that the brand emphasizes its products are natural but the dog food contained glyphosate (a chemical linked to weedkiller Roundup). On this, U.S. District Court Judge Louis L. Stanton said, “A reasonable customer would not be so absolutist as to require that ‘natural’ means there is no glyphosate, even an accidental and innocuous amount, in the products.” “The presence of negligible amounts of glyphosate in a dog food product that do not have harmful, ‘toxic,’ or ‘carcinogenic’ effects is not likely to affect consumers’ decisions in purchasing the product and is thus not harmful.”

Ray said she also feeds her dog with Nutrish food.

Suit Against The Rachael Ray Show

In 2013, Christina Pagliarolo, a teenager, sued The Rachael Ray Show for negligence and deliberate wreaking. TODAY reports that the teen weighed 260 lbs and joined the show’s weight loss program while agreeing to lose 70 pounds. She said that the trainer constantly yelled at her and made her do rigorous exercises which gave her several injuries. Furthermore, she got serious leg injuries after falling from the StairMaster because the trainer kept on increasing the speed.

Scarf & Dunkin’ Donut Commercials

In 2008, when Ray appeared in Dunkin’ Donuts commercials wearing a white scarf, the matter became a hot topic. The brand received several complaints regarding the black-and-white scarf wrapped around the celebrity chef’s neck stating that it looks like ‘a kaffiyeh’ and the ‘ad offers symbolic support for Muslim extremism and terrorism,’ Los Angeles Times reports.

Michelle Malkin, a US-based conservative political commentator said, “The kaffiyeh has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant (and not-so-ignorant) fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons.”

Dunkin’ clarified it has no such intention and only wanted to promote the cold coffee through the ad. However, they pulled down the advertisement due to ‘misperception’ of promoting something it didn’t mean to.
